It's quite possible it's quieter here now that when it sounds like you were here last.

The town is always fairly quiet, even when the mine is running. Of course, this latest mining company has now gone defunct, and the mining crews all gone, again... You can still walk down the middle of the main street in the middle of the day.

If it was the block the bank vault is on, then that's across the side road from the Post Office Hotel, on the group of blocks that now are part of the Hub area.

Blocks in Chillagoe are all the standard 20x50 metres. Lots of people have 2 or 3 blocks. Not quite the same as living in the bush, but a bit less work, and you rarely see your neighbours. Stand in the main street, even in the "tourist season" and there's not many cars around.

Pretty nice sunset last night.
