No the ferry did not open at 05:00..
It has now just started (06:30) it's first trip with a reduced load, only centre lane..

23mm in the gauge here this morning, it looks like the weather has cleared north for the time being. JTWC monitoring 90P for possible formation of a low in the coral sea at the moment.
A good start to April for you Bunyip, a couple of 100+mm there.

Nice day yesterday and again today..Got some mowing done ...went over the scruffy patchs again but will require another time or 2 to get it looking good...might go and get a bit oif spraying done now.. I imagine there will be quite a line up for the ferry Bunyip..?..Were they just trying to get it opened for easter..? That would be a drama Scott with a cat5 sitting there. Maybe that scenario would follow something similar to that of Cyclone Ita in 2014. The dates would be fairly similar as well. Track map of Ita from BOM.

I remember Ita , I was almost squashed by a big tea tree log when we were clearing our way out..
She made a bloody big mess.
Scott: Yeah there was a fair bit of traffic waiting at 05:00 and some fairly unhappy about the delay.
It seems AMSA have put conditions on when they can run due to flood heights.
Not 100% sure but because the drive rope is now connected to a 3t anchor buried about 20m up the road
it seems they are concerned that may not be enough to operate in high flow conditions..
They say this has cost us $1.8m all because 2 things happened that were totally avoidable.
1, commercial vessels left moored on the public pontoon. (the go fund me money should be paid to fix that not his boat)
2, failure of the ferry master to moor the ferry to it's flood piles.
Anyway just 9 mm in the gauge here this morning.
Oh and what brain dead public servant scheduled routine maintenance for the radar in April ?

My memory of Ita is that it knocked down all the guttering on the northern side of the house.

You have to love all the FB “weather” sites showing Mali and then a huge hand drawn arrow pointing towards Qld, when a trained meteorologist with the backing of the resources of the entire US military (JTWC ) says things like…
DETERMINISTIC TRACK GUIDANCE IS FRANKLY A MESS, ESPECIALLY INTHE LONG-RANGE FORECAST.
And
BEYOND TAU72 HOWEVER, THINGS GET AWKWARD.

Starting to see some model alignment on a cooktown or north crossing at the end of the week with JTWC headed in that direction too...Guess we will wait and see as the bloody thing hasnt even started to move yet.... My memeories of Ita were of surprise at such a strong system so late in the year and also the damage it did to the vegetation and corals around Lizard island...interestingly the laggoon at Lizard has become studied in terms of coral recovery after cyclones with one mob taking regular photo's of the same areas over time...I'm amazed at how quick the recovery has been.... However like you weary, I'm also a little concerned about the future when FB becomes the go to for News and weather particularly as the algorithms then starting injecting any similar content into my news feeds...Fortunately i tend to do some basic research before beleiving what i read and whom its coming from and why but many folks simply jump onto any content as "official".. Anyoone else look behind the page creaters before giving them any air..?..Sometimes you have to do a little digging but this new weather page has racked up over a 1000 followers this week and some of the dopey commenters take seriously anything the little Tacka shares....Check out his "About"..and a couple of others that many people claim are their go to guys for weather...("I take no notice of the BOM you are my go-to for weather blah blah blah.. )are just mid-teenagers as well... 19mm here in the last 4 days. I read somewhere of a switch to El Nino in April, maybe after this burst we could go into a drier period of weather. The GFS has the system fairly stationary for the next couple of days then heading west and weakening before landfall on the eastern Cape. Still a bit of wait and see though I think. I'll be sticking to the official sites like BOM and JTWC. Still the amateur sites are normally good for a giggle. Should've been heading North today, canned because of this bloody Low. Too waterlogged up there still to risk it. Bought a heap of fuel etc weeks ago, could sell it for a tidy profit right now lol. Nah we'll go burn some down Hinchy for a few days. |
