Awe-inspiring photographs snapped from inside the eye of Hurricane Dorian by a special division of the US Air Force has revealed the tremendous power of the Category 5 storm. Air Force and reconnaissance planes - known as the "Hurricane Hunters" - have been crisscrossing the eye of the storm, where they have witnessed and photographed a phenomenon called the "stadium effect" inside Dorian. The "stadium effect" makes the hurricane eye look like the giant bowl of a sports stadium, and is only seen during extremely powerful storms. Wind gusts over 354km/h have been recorded, and Dorian's power is forecast to increase.  |

Wow. That would be one bumpy flight to get into the eye! Impressive photo. Here it is from another perspective, making landfall over the Bahamas. CNN is reporting that Dorian is still Cat5 and moving at 1mph to the west.
Consistent winds at that speed for 24 hours will make a mess of the the low islands.

A great graphic from NOAA and on the BBC website.  Sustained winds over 250kmph sounds quite terrible. According to the BBC the buildings in Grand Bahama can only be built if they are certified to Cat4 wind ratings, so there is some hope there.

That is actually frightening to see the eye so well structured and that big. That is still one very powerful storm.
That eye wall would be horrifying.
Those Sustained winds are incredible. |

Yes, some very sad images coming from the Bahamas. I couldn't imagine 250-280kmph winds consistently blowing for over 24 hours. The damage must be widespread and total in some areas.

Dorian is still on the move, this time as a "post-tropical" storm and flattening trees in Nova Scotia. Forecasts are for her to cross the Atlantic and head for the northern UK.
