Did end up with 16.5mm for NOV. First 2 weeks of DEC are looking no better. A lot of pot plant watering coming up I think.

6.6mm in Gordonvale. Crispy grass. Was up at Peeramon yesterday and a couple of storms rolled over, not much rain in it really, their grass has just managed to get a green tinge to it. |
Records for 2022: 1520mm 2023: 2710mm 2024: 951.6mm (no records April-Sept) |

25mm in the gauge this morning. Good storm from 11pm to about 4am. Lighting and thunder. Rain around now but... looks like we'll be lucky to get something from the edge. Edit at 11.20pm - fairly big storm cell moving towards us. Sheet lightning across the whole sky. Fingers crossed. Edited by user Friday, 1 December 2023 11:21:16 PM(UTC)

We had storms from hell yesterday..not much rain though. Our planned trip up to the Cairns Botanic gardens xmas plant sale today is no more as today is about cleaning up the damage from all the wind... So many newly potted plants in large pots tumbled over and a massive tree just had to collapse right onto a new potted plant area..I cut down a few large ones adjacent over the last couple of weeks but this one was leaning in the wrong direction and i was about to tackle it with a pulley and wedges so maybe it realised and thought it would go out in style on its own terms.. Went out the reef on thursday and what was meant to about a 10 knot day blew up to about a solid 20...closest wind station at Lucinda showed gusts up to 28 knots....fishing was slow and difficult as well..... seems me and the weather are not seeing eye to eye at the moment...last time it messed with me like this was a couple of months before Yasi when a micro burst exploded on us causing the worst flash flooding we have had on our place.....I hope its not an omen.. I hope there's not to much damage Scott. Those sudden wind storms can be a pain. Had one knock a tree onto our back colorbond fence once. Caused a fair bit of damage.
Still desert like conditions here in White Rock. It looked very dark down to the south yesterday but still no rain here.

What a bummer Scott. Hope it wasn't as bad as it looked.
We had 7mm in the gauge this morning from a storm in the early hours. There was 7mm yesterday morning as well. Can't complain. But doesn't look like we'll get any more for a while.

yeah no worries guys...got 2/3 done over several stints...holy [censored]it was uncomfortable work today..the humidity was intense... Hard to beleive Cairns has got stuff all rain at all first week into december but Chillago has been getting regular storms..Looks like nothing for Cairns anytime soon either SM...unless you happen to jag a storm.. Seems Higgins is stirring up drama and spruiking for subscriptions with the latest low forming near the Solomonsdespite most saying it will head off to the south... Better get your milk, bread and toilet paper folks Also the guys at Oz cyclone chasers have decided to join the party and turn their cyclone chasing hobby into a dedicated weather page .... https://www.facebook.com/weatheriqoz

Scott those storms that carry wind are an absolute menace, around here they normally come in from the north west and cause big damage to my fruit trees as everything is more exposed from the NW.
Ive had 2mm of rain here in last 9days grass gone crunchy again....seems the our wet season is again happening in the desert country of mount garnet, chillagoe etc |

That's a bugga Scott. Hope the damage was not too bad.
Managed to pick up 5mm overnight, a cell popped up right on us around 01:10
The crazy is getting a start on with all this mention of a system in the CS. Might need to get a couple of gas bottles swaps but other than that I think we right to go.
Cheers

All good Bunyip..just a couple of big fat logs to go and then have to cut back some of the potted stuff that got squashed but could have been worse ..at least no structures weere hit.. BTW Tropo, if you were to be in track of a big cyclone a day or 2 out would you chainsaw those fruit trees to save them just in case..? Edited by user Tuesday, 5 December 2023 3:39:19 PM(UTC)

BTW Tropo, if you were to be in track of a big cyclone a day or 2 out would you chainsaw those fruit trees to save them just in case..?
Hey Scott the majority of my fruit trees are 4m and under in height and I plan to keep them that way for cyclone purposes, some of my prized trees such as durian and marang i will let grow to a max of about 6 metres but not any taller.
Certainly in the event of a 90% chance of a cyclone hit I will prune anything over 4m in height back to 3-4m, from everything ive read the real damage from cyclones occurs about 3m above the ground like a buzz saw going through. Some of my most prized trees are grown on trellis for cyclone purposes.
Letting any fruit trees get to big up here is bad idea not just for cyclones however that is the biggest threat but bats, cockatoos, parrots every other threat becomes more of an issue the bigger trees get.
Certainly if I had bought an established property with large vulnerable trees like durian I would have to cut them back at the 90% chance of a direct hit, they just take way too long to start fruiting and are extremely poorly rooted, this goes for rambutan and a lesser extent mangosteen. Mango seem to have a much deeper better root system to take cyclones however young trees in that vulnerable 6m or less size also get toppled over in florida in hurricances.
My other back up plan for some prized trees that are not on trellis in the event of incoming cyclone is to belt in 4 star pickets around the tree very deeply and tie ropes off to the trunk to at least try to save the trunk, laterals are likely to all get smashed off but if the trunk can be saved they will regrow.Edited by user Tuesday, 5 December 2023 3:33:14 PM(UTC)

The position of the cyclone at the moment looks like a lose-lose situation for the NTC&T. If it comes our way it could be a severe one which we don't want. If it tracks the way the GFS model is predicting, South, we may continue in our desert conditions.

YTD: 2193.5mm These were my thoughts exactly, certainly dont want it here but if it goes south we are in for some even worse hot weather if thats possible with still no rain and crunchy grass for early-mid decemeber |
