Australian wildfire: Hundreds of koalas feared dead

Hundreds of koalas are feared to have died in an Australian bushfire, animal rescuers say.

The blaze burnt through 2,000 hectares of bush containing a prime koala breeding ground in New South Wales, around 250 miles north of Sydney.

Rescuers said the deaths were particularly tragic as the koalas were a diverse breed, with one expert calling it a "national tragedy".

The native species has suffered significant decline in recent decades.

Monitoring groups say koala numbers are falling, with as few as 43,000 left in the wild. Their decline has been blamed on habitat loss, disease, dog attacks and climate change.

Hate to think of the wildlife lost in the bushfire burning near me, nearly 20,000 hectares destroyed & most of it inaccessible to help any surviving critters.

Tamworth, Moonbi & Kootingal(same water supply) moved to level 5 just over a month ago. They are trying to get the water usage down to 150 L per household per day. Same in Armidale I believe.

Great news for Tenterfield which had been carting water in for several months has now established a new bore that is producing 13L per second which will see them being able to supply the town with no restrictions.

Managed to get 9.2 mm in the gauge. We were just on the northern edge of the system, not much for those up towards the border. Another 0.6 early this morning.

Any luck up your way?

Wow. The smoke from the fire at Belrose is pretty thick. I can see it from the CBD quite clearly.

Very heavy smoke haze here this morning with viability down to around 2000 meters. Kaputar fire has flared up again. Sky was un-observable at 9:00 am when I went to do the obs. Temps forecast to ramp up in the coming days, expecting high 30`s later in the week.
