3.55pm just hit 37°.
Creek dried up a couple months ago.

Do any of us believe the el Nino thing will bring more rain...

Storms showing up on radar around Ravenshoe BigGrin BigGrin

YS , to pollinate each flower is tricky , but once you get the hang of it it's quite ezy.
It involves using a toothpick to move the pollen from the male bit to the female bit.
There is only 1 bee in the world that pollinates vanilla and it is almost extinct. The Aztecs
had natural vanilla, but 99.5% of the world production is by hand pollination.
I have a 6m ladder and a lot is way past that.
We get a few beans each year but I'm starting to look at getting into it in a bigger way.

Hi 28, I don't think it has to much effect on our weather here on the North Tropical coast,
but it does influence weather events inland and south.
I say bring it on a couple of wet years for the rest of the country would be fantastic.

Cheers

Been trying to sell my little cottage for about 5 years. Had a couple nibbles when they opened the borders. Hoping some panicking southerner will want somewhere to escape, when they reopen the border again.

Reckon the weather has changed in the last 2 to 3 days. It has that heavy stifling heat that can only bring storms, but doesn't. A few more clouds around in the daytime, so looks like the "build up" (as they call it in the NT) has arrived.

Currently looking grey to the south with a nice coolish breeze. Radar looking a little stormy west of Atherton & Ravenshoe, but reckon it'll go to the east of us. Looks like Dimbulah is in for it though.

Edit: Went through to the east of us. We just got a nice cool light breeze, full of grit & dust. Such is life out here.

Here's a pic. Thought it looked pretty odd for rain. No wonder I felt grit in my eyes. Smoke must've blown over from the fires at Arriga too. Could smell the smoke.

Are you getting a shower this morning 28 ?

Where too if you sell up ? Anywhere is going to be a big change.

I think your right about the change, can really feel it here on the coast now.

Had a good squall this morning...felt like a front moving through...

That looks brutal out there 28 and its still just October...

I really noticed the change in season a week or so back when the tradewinds dies off...a bit of easterly and northerly breeze brought an instant taste of summer..

It also bought some great fishing weather and after some successful trips the freezer is finally well stocked with Red Emperor, trout and a variety of other tasty vacuum packed reef fish....

Now we can just spend some trips diving and exploring the place..Zoe bay and falls on Hinchinbrook Island and the clam gardens of Orpheous island and the Palm group are our next destination..we would like to get to Lizard island sometime as well....we have been here 25 years and really not seen much of FNQ so finally now is the time..

Bunyip,my best advice regarding growing vanilla is to buy it from IGA....otherwise plant it on some sort of trellis structure or posts or teepee that contains the vine to a height you can still reach..my missus has planted it on some tree ferns and palms and of course it just continues to grow to the heavens..be buggered if I would be climbing a ladder with a toothpick..lol

Nice to get a morning shower, albeit brief. One whole millimetre. Seems I got the most in town.

Where to when I sell. Be sad to leave Chillagoe, but too hard on my own I hate to say. Better off renting. More expensive, but someone else is responsible... Probably get a small caravan and go on the road. Gypsy at heart. That the brief description. Lol.

Edit: Geez, I envy you guys out on the coast, sometimes. Just going thru one of those stages, p!ssed off with the dust & grit at this time of year. We're still on water restrictions but at least they've apparently started building a new water tank on the hill, and apparently they've found water 4km west of town, but need to get funding to build a pipeline...

You never know 28, our neighbour had his place on the market for 10 years and he finally sold it.

Was up the Tablelands on Sunday and there was a few good rumbles, apparently Mount Garnet copped a flogging the day before?

About an hour after we left Yungaburraba, a hail storm hit....

Yesterday and the previous night it was "mistling" if you could call it that. The faintest of a sprinkle, continually. Had 2mm out of it, so that's something.

Temperature has been comfortable the last few days, but got a bit hot here for a few hours again. The evenings are still nice though. Borderline doona or sheet & blankets.

Bit of a shower last night, but lucky to call it a mm .

Good luck 28 I'm sure someone will come along sooner or later, Be a good life
living on the road, change the weather with a tank of fuel.

Thought there would be a few more cells popping up by now today, as I could
see it building when spraying earlier.

Cheers

Please, for the love of (something big in the sky) can someone tell me there is a decent replacement for the weatherzone forum? I have lost all my links and some people messaged me last year from the old WZ forum saying there were at various forum locations but they are all sub-standard. No experienced posters, no excitement when local weather events are happening.

Seriously, is there a website forum I don't know? Is there some FB groups I don't know about?

No offence but the replacement forums to the WZ forums are...lacking to put it politely.

Anyone know something I don't?

Drivenunder20 ,
I think it is a case of being divided up between a few different sites, we had so many people from so many different walks of life on the old WZ, now it's a few here and a few there and a lot just don't bother at all.
It is a bit sad that the site was not offered for sale before the close as it was a huge resource with a wide range of both expert and armature input.

Could do with a storm down here, things are drying out and getting dusty.

Anyone feel like guessing when we might see a Monsoon ?

Cheers

You need to remember that there has been absolutely SFA happening, (weatherwise), for many months now.

When there's nothing to discuss, a lot of members may have a peek every week or so, then go and do other stuff.
Maybe only another month and the storms might be a fairly regular thing, then the punters will start popping up again.

Cmon DU..we need some input from you to liven things up a bit...BigGrin

I think its just been the weirdest year and many people have had a lot else on their minds...plus as mentioned nothing has been happening weatherwise...

But we did get a nice heavy quickly passing shower this morning which my wwoofers were trying to convince me was "rain"...I think I made a fruitless attempt to convince them of the difference and that a 10mm downpour really wasnt the start of the wet season.....I always find it pretty funny when 20 something year old european backpackers try and tell me that the 600mm of annual rain they get back home means they know all about "rain" and what the FNQ wet season will be like (before they have actually experienced it).

Oh dear it looks like the unique status of the isolated Daintree is under threat..

With better access will come more tourists and development..good for some no doubt but I imagine many folks moved up there for the remoteness of the place....

Whats the story Bunyip..?

Scott123 , I always find it funny when 20 or 30 somethings from south, buy a block in the rainforest before the WET and buy mid March the for sale sign is back up and they have gone south again LOL

As for the bridge, hurry up and build it. The Daintree has been saved. Now it is time to build the infrastructure and facilities to cater to tourists that have been sold the idea that it's a good place to go.
For 25 years the council has invested money to sell the Daintree to the world, propping up tourism marketing bodies with rate payers monies.

The council milks the tourist to cross the ferry $28 return and there is no where to pull up, no car parks , no bins , no toilets. 1 Lookout that is grown over. We need more infrastructure for all these people that come here, that sit in a queue, drive to Cape Trib , look around and drive back to the ferry queue.

Build the bridge, people will have more time to relax and look around, not be worried about getting stuck in a queue.

Then there is the yearly dredging of the river at the ferry site. The silt that is then washed down stream coating areas in acid sulphate right out to the inshore reef systems. They can only dredge when there are big tides , so lots of run.

Building a bridge is the only real environmentally friendly sustainable answer. But the bat [censored]crazy greens are too bloody stupid to see the fact.

Back to the weather. Hot and starting to get real sticky. Looking forward to the wet.

Cheers

Just be careful what you wish for bunyip...

As has been seen down here with the recent Mayfair 101 1.5 billion dollar development that was going to bring 10000 new jobs, all it seems to do is incite the pro development mob and all the greedy speculators..more roadworks and traffic, grandiose infrastructure plans and relaxtion of building regs to encourage more semi high rise buildings, helicopter hire in the town limits, plans for Jetski's and watersports to harrass the peace of our lovely quiet beaches and more of those city types that move in looking to capitalize on a development boom...

I'm so glad the scamming bald Skase has been found out and his pie in the sky plans are now history...

Hopefully we will see a return to the village life that was the reason we moved here..

https://www.afr.com/rear...-sellers-20201125-p56huv

and yeah it looks to be a change in the weather finally to more a showery and stormy period ...who knows maybe even an early start to the Monsoon with the la nina signs increasing...?
