ARCTIC ICE EXTENT
OCTOBER 2020 Severe-weather. eu continue to publish in depth analysis of the science of weather. related Phenomena. This article from the link below shows Arctic ice extent since satellite imaging in 1979. The long term average is based on 41 yrs of data. They call that long term average but really that is misuse of the adjective’long’ . None the less the report discusses the current situation of a slow start for ice build. The report discusses in detail factors that affect ice extent and the implications for Northern hemisphere mid latitude weather for the rest of January 2021. Factors discussed include salinity patterns, polar vortex split, synoptic patterns at the surface , La Niña influence and jet stream behaviour.
