Not your imagination Dormant, the image used to go out as far as the radar could “see”. Why it’s being limited like that I don’t know.

Bom now have crossing the peninsula as a low and sitting off Lockhart. Great, it can spin up into a Cyclone from there and hit Cairns😡

Despite not being able to see in the gap between I took a chance and went to Cairns today. Was a lovely day, high thin cloud and rather hot.

Checking the radar circles around the country the only ones with the peculiar 200km circle rendition are the Weipa and Cairns ones. The rest do seem to have a composite using info from adjacent radar sites out to 500k plus. I'm disturbed that the cyclone prone areas are so poorly rendered with rain bands which could indicate rotation or direction cut off over a distance of approximately 180km.

I've sort of lost confidence in the radar from when it was out of action for so long.

When you look at the single image of Cairns 512 there are massive gaps. There used to be gaps at the edges, but nothing like what we currently (don't) see.

Getting nice & black in the northwest. Getting that pre-pre-storm feeling & nothing happening. Lol.

Still, it's been good overcast weather so plants aren't wilting. May have to start watering again in the next couple days.

I braved the BOM feedback process to ask why Weipa and Cairns radar images are limited to 256 km ATM, expect an answer in a couple of weeks.

Maybe they'll discus it in the lunchroom at smoko for a week or so, and come up with some semi-plausible bullshite.

Glad we made town yesterday, never needed to fire up my pathetic ancient notebook, which has a massive black dead pixel blob in the middle, outside Bunnings to see if we needed to bail from town and hotfoot it home. But today we would have bailed as it seems the rain was on and off frequently.

Yeah, really bad blind spot to the S of the radar now. Really bad for storms coming off the tablelands to Gvale. Like someone's put a bloody stick in front of the radar.
